Running Deborah Wilde Books has been a dream come true. It’s as close as I’ll ever get to owning a bookstore, and I’ve loved connecting with readers through my direct store. Plus, selling my books directly allowed me to offer exclusive deals, better prices on paperbacks and audiobooks, and—keep my books out of Kindle Unlimited (KU).

Why I Originally Went Wide

Like many of you, I subscribed to Kindle Unlimited, and I get it. As a reader, it’s an incredible deal. If I had paid for every book I read through KU, I’d be eating ramen for life. I also appreciated that KU lets readers try new-to-them authors risk-free.

But as an indie author, KU has serious downsides:

  • Inconsistent royalty payments. Payments didn’t always match up with order numbers, and Amazon insisted it wasn’t a glitch.
  • Unfair exclusivity rules. Traditionally published authors can sell wide and still be in KU, but indie authors can’t.
  • Amazon’s return policy. Until recently, readers could return a book up to a year after purchase—even if they had read it multiple times. Amazon changed the return window to a week, but they still don’t check whether the book was read.

Why I’m Returning to Kindle Unlimited

Unfortunately, times are tough, and the reality is that many readers can’t afford to buy books outright right now. At the same time, Facebook’s privacy updates have made it harder for me to reach new readers through ads.

My store, Deborah Wilde Books, has taken a major hit, and after a lot of soul-searching, I’ve decided to return all Nava Katz ebooks to Kindle Unlimited, effective immediately.

My hope is that this will bump up my revenue enough to keep paying all those wonderful editors, proofreaders, cover designers, and narrators who help bring my books to life.

What This Means for You

  • If you’re a KU reader, you’ll be able to binge the entire Unlikeable Demon Hunter series at no extra cost. (***If you’ve already read it through KU, I don’t get paid for re-reads. Lol)
  • Paperbacks and audiobooks will still be available at Deborah Wilde Books.
  • The final book in the Bedeviled AF series is coming soon! And, as always, it will release early on my store before going wide.

How You Can Help

Now more than ever, word of mouth is everything. If you love the Unlikeable Demon Hunter books, please spread the word about them being in KU! Share with your book-loving friends, reader groups (where appropriate), and social media.

I’ve also included a shareable graphic below—please feel free to use it!

Thank you for your support. I’m staying glass half full and can’t wait for you to read what’s next!
